Heating, Cooling, and Water
Saving energy doesn't mean freezing in the winter or sweating all summer long. You can save energy and money while improving the environment in your home. In this section you'll find tips for updating and maintaining your home for increased energy efficiency all year long.
- Make sure heat is off when not needed.
- Run ceiling paddle fans on low, blowing up in winter.
- Close shades and drapes at night to keep heat in during the winter.
- Keep drapes and shades open during the day to let in the heat from the winter sun.
- Reduce heat loss from the fireplace by opening the damper in the bottom of the firebox (if provided) or slightly opening the nearest window.
- Attach heavy-duty, clear sheets of plastic on the inside of windows to reduce the amount of cold air entering your home.
- Tightly close and seal all exterior doors and storm windows.
- Clean warm-air registers, baseboard heaters and radiators as needed. Make sure they are not blocked by furniture, carpeting or drapes.
