  1. Set the refrigerator temperature to 34 degrees F to 37 degrees F and freezer temperature to 0 degrees F to 5 degrees F.
  2. Unplug unused refrigerators or freezers.
  3. If you are heating water in the microwave or on the stovetop, start with hot tap water instead of cold.
  4. Remember to use the kitchen exhaust fan when cooking and turn it off after cooking.
  5. Let hot food cool before storing it in the refrigerator.
  6. Use cold water when running the garbage disposal.
  7. Buy ENERGY STAR approved appliances.
  8. Keep the coils on the back or bottom of the refrigerator clean for peak efficiency.
  9. Cut your water heater use in half by using low-flow aerating faucets.
  10. Use fans wisely. In just one hour, these fans can pull out a houseful of warmed or cooled air.
  11. Make sure that refrigerator and freezer doors seal tightly. Close a dollar bill in the door, and then try sliding it out. If you can move the bill, the seal is not tight enough. Replace door gaskets to keep your appliance working properly and save energy.
